"Imagine a long time ago, before all of this mess. Ten individuals with different interests and skill sets, all going about their business of living. At some point it comes to them that maybe they should appoint one of the Ten to keep an eye on the overall interests of the Ten as a whole, so that the Ten as individuals can continue to go about their business of living.
The 'One' they appoint takes up the task of looking after the collective interests of the whole Ten, as he continues doing his own personal business of living and everything is fine ... for awhile.
The 'One' becomes distracted from his business of living with the realization of how 'important' this task of 'looking after the interests' really is and begins to like 'it' more than his boring business of living. The problem compounds when 'Another' of the Ten also sees how 'enviable' this task of 'looking after the interests' is and wants the task for himself, after all he too is bored with his business of living as well.
'Another' sets out to convince the Ten that he is more suited for the task of 'looking after the interests' and that they should appoint him to the role of the 'One'. At first, 'Another' explains that he is more suited for the task and could do the task better, but that doesn't work. After all, the task is what it is and the 'One' seems to be doing the task just fine. So, 'Another' says to the Ten, not only will he 'look after their interests' but he will expand those interests to include some of the menial things they are constantly doing in their business of living that they would prefer not to do. The idea intrigues the Ten. 'Another' also begins making up lies about the 'One' to discredit him among the Ten. Some of the Ten believe the lies, some of them don't ... some of them couldn't make up their mind. But all of them were distracted from their business of living.
The Ten's distraction becomes an obsession. The group of Ten becomes two groups of Five, then three groups of Three with one of the original Ten still undecided. The original Ten hardly speak to one another anymore, they just argue and fight, and their business of living has suffered greatly."
